A chance to do better for the father of the math.

My father, born Mario Francisco Vidal on October 4, 1923 in Key West, son to Victor Vidal and Dolores Lopez Mayg, also of Key West, FL, passed away this past July 6th, three months shy of his 90th  birthday. You may have even ready my post of the day he passed and perhaps even been one of the countless well-wishers who crashed my e-mail server with e-mails!  My father loved his home town and carried that love, and the name of Key West, to the 18 countries that he would live in during his career as one of the world’s top hoteliers.  Before passing away, the only request he made of his wife and his five sons was that Key West be the final resting place for his ashes.  Our family’s commitment to honoring my father’s last request is what is at the root of this message, but it can be much more than that, if we choose as much.

Our plan is to drive to Key West on Friday; October 4, 2013, what would have been his 90th birthday, and together with friends and other members of the family we will do as he instructed us to and spread his ashes out on the water from the Reynolds Street Pier, the very place where he learned to swim as a child. My father was a man who spread a great deal of love during his lifetime and that love was returned and has manifested in the multitudes of people who will join us on October 5th to bring a Native Son of Key West back home to rest and pay our last respects.  We need your help to do this;  How?  We need a tiny bit of financial support in order to make this happen and you can be a part of it!  I am asking for you help by contributing whatever you can.  There are many of you and even though we only have 24 hours, I’ve never known you to back down or not step up.  This is a chance to do better, between all of us, we can give my father the only this he asked all of us for:  to go back home to rest in peace.    I invite you to participate in what is a truly human event.  I will be posting on the events of the upcoming weekend and everyone who was a part of this journey will have their name listed in the honor plaque that I will post next weekend; never forget – what any one of us can do, two can improve on and many of us can make it happen!  Thank you for your support!  Just click on the Donate button below to join the caravan and bring a native son of Key West back home!

Now this is what I call doing better!

A most spectacular standard deviation

Since I moved the Catalogue of Calculations to wordpress, I don’t think I have ever addressed you, all of you, directly. I have no problem when my mind tells me that I am writing for all of you, but even though I know what the numbers that represent how many of you there are mean, I have had no sense of scale with which to compare that written numerical quantity, until now, and I have not completely assimilated the scale yet.

THANK YOU!; THANK ALL OF YOU!

…for crashing two of my mail servers with the ocean of condolences, blessings and good wishes that I’ve received after posting a  few words in recognition and in honor of my father, who passed away this last Saturday; July 6.  I am moved beyond words, but for only a few seconds!

WOW!; there are SO MANY OF YOU I had no idea what that felt like so thank you also for doing some math that allowed me to have a sense of scale.   I do not know exactly how many e-mails were received, some of them may have been lost when the server crashed, but it doesn’t matter it would take more than 3 of my father’s 90 year lifetimes, reading without stopping for food or sleep for 92% of each lifetime to make a small dent in the total that made it through.

I could easily say that I don’t know what to say, but that would be a lie and I would fall down dead immediately.  It’s not that I don’t know what to say, it’s that I can’t fathom how to reply to each and every one of you even to just write THANK YOU.  That’s the thing about time, you can delude yourself by thinking she will succumb to math, but she laughs at math and at us. (If we were able to perceive time as a human manifestation, it would indisputably be a female manifestation).    I can’t count this post as a means to accomplish what I want to do because it doesn’t.  It would be cheating; it would simply way beyond comfortable to express my love and gratitude to each one of you with one general-purpose thank you post, in fact it would be cheating, which is a first cousin of lying and once again, I would immediately fall drop dead.    A short while ago, I thought of something that might just come close to answering each and every one of the e-mails that continue to arrive.  I remembered that in mathematics, you should always use the right type of math for the problem to be solved.  Since I was counting, a function of quantity, I naturally continued to think in terms of Arithmetic to figure out how to solve this quandary.   This math can’t be solved with Arithmetic; it’s not a numeric problem as much as it is a matter of scale, so that makes it a job for physics!  The rest came easy.  Here’s the math:

I am not physically able to individually write a response to each and every one you, but I can THANK YOU in all of the languages that you have written to me in, or at least the ones I’ve encountered so far.  This way the scale can be accounted for through the use of language and linguistics.  Each one of you knows what language is your primary language and it is also the language you used to write so many beautiful words.  Below this paragraph is an image (it had to be an image because we still suck at font compatibility).  In that image, the words THANK YOU are written in each of the 51 languages that you have written to me in, so when you read it in your native language, know that I am thanking you directly, and every other person who wrote to me in your language instead using individual names.  It’s the closest I could come to a personal reply that yielded a valid condition for the purpose of the function.  So here it is;

Dankie

(The last one- with all the numbers; is thank you in binary.  It would be unacceptable to leave out computers.  I owe them a great debt for sacrificing so many of their total number at the hands of my dad!  They provided him with comfort, entertainment and even companionship at times. So they go on the list.)

On behalf of my father and myself, I’ll thank you all one more time, in the one language that isn’t on the list because it is my primary language and I wanted to write in a very personal way, with every ounce of my heart:

THANK YOU!

We just DID better, keep it going!

Political Wordplay

The systematic destruction of language and linguistics, particularly of the English language continues to progress and has recently made an appearance in the political arena.  Recently the political issues regarding gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and trans-gender (also known as GLBT) rights, in particular the legality of same-sex marriage, have taken center-stage in the political news arena in the U.S.A. after a landmark decision by the Supreme Court.

In many of the seemingly endless and redundant articles and posts on the matter of the Supreme Court’s decision and the same-sex marriage controversy, the word homophobe has been used regularly, in fact, in terms of linguistics; it’s a wonder why homophobe hasn’t been officially categorized as a neologism yet.  It’s been used as to describe a person who dislikes, hates or is otherwise biased towards the GLBT community in general and any individual member of that community in particular for a long time.

Let’s look at the term HOMOPHOBIA.  It is made up of two root morphemes:  homo-, in this case used as a common vulgar prefix referring to a homosexual (which is such a vulgar word) and the suffix –phobia which means -an extreme abnormal fear of or aversion.  If we were to apply the rules of language to this combination, the term should mean someone who is afraid of homosexuals instead of a categorical title used to identify people who dislike, disagree or are biased towards the GLBT community.  I guess nobody reads the dictionary anymore.

One more thing:  Technically, a homophobe is a person who is afraid of anyone who is gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or trans-gender. To be scared of someone who is GLBT; isn’t that kind of totally gay?

Human beings are a trip.  When will we learn that we are all we have and that we are a planet of humans and not a world made up of different kinds of people.

We can do better.

Incalculable

I continuously end up utterly perplexed every time I contemplate or think on the fact that at some point in time, we humans found ourselves with an entire planet as a blank slate, incomparably diverse and powerful minds as tools and thousands of years to do something with what we had; and the best we were able to do was turn the world into a scary place; a very scary place. The scariest part is that it appears we actually believe it is a scary place and therefore we live our entire lives – scared.

Without having to exercise any judgment at all, this is, at the very least, an incalculable waste – of so many things..

I may not be able to undo this by myself, but I can choose to not live in fear, so I did and I don’t live in fear. It’s not impossible and in fact, I can say it’s not even very difficult to do, all one has to do is to realize that all the scary stuff is make belief and props – just like in the movies, in fact, the “world” isn’t a scary place at all, we are simply told that it is, over and over again throughout our entire lives and we believe it; because we also believe that everything we are told or read is true.

Don’t live in fear, nothing in the human experience requires that anyone to do so; there’s nothing to be scared of except believing that we must be scared of everything we are told be scared of. There is no math I can write to express this or try to solve it; it is an incalculable thing. Why? Because the world that we think we live in not real and I don’t mean “not real” as in the Matrix movies, but not real in that what we know as our “world” and the inhuman quality of life that these scary, make-believe constructs impose on us and which we authorize by believing them, are NOT an external physical reality with its own will and judgment that imposes itself on us – it’s an imaginary construct and therefore can’t be measured or have a mathematical value assigned so as to compare any of it to the rest of the universe. Why? Because it’s not real. It is overly dramatic and poorly conceived horror story thought up by a few people thousands of years ago to try to get everyone else (who were indisputably believed to be idiots) to believe that certain things were real and scary (especially things that gave some people total authority to dictate what was real) so they could in turn, impose their will on everyone and anyone who believed the story they were told – and everyone believed, all of it; probably because the “few people” who came up with the story were our first leaders; Kings, Emperors, Chiefs, Elders, Lords, Noblemen and their various posses, so who was going to argue? This is how a small handful of us were able to define the “world” thousands of years ago and take control over the every other person living in it and how they continue to control 7 billion of us in 2013 (they still believe everyone is an idiot). In the end; thousands of years ago, before shit and shinola and when no one knew nothing about anything because everything was new, a few of us simply made up all the scary things that make us afraid and subsequently obedient, and we chose to believe them; we still continue to believe it – all of it. It is possible that we will continue to believe it, until we choose to stop, to stop believing the setup story of what amounts to a gigantic con, the biggest one and quite possibly the only one, ever. The “world”, “society”, “civilization” the concept of “sovereignty” and a few other scripted bits of nonsense are not real, they are all simply scary monsters that feed an idea which in turns allows for all humans to believe that us and them actually exists, among other things. They are the grift in the con that goes by the name of human civilization throughout history and our acceptance of all of this as “real” has allowed for everything in human history to be rigged so that the con always favors those “few” who believe they run things, generation after generation. Here’s the perplexing part; those few who have been the authors and beneficiaries of this macabre fraud are people, just like the rest of us, and that means that believe all of this shit too and live in fear just like the rest of us; they are just scared of different make believe monsters and scary things, one that supposedly have class and dress properly.

The only math I’ve ever been able to even scribble regarding this entire incalculable hallucination is that if you add all of it up, the result is zero (0). This means the when you attempt to find any value at all in the rules of the world, civilization and the human condition and the history that they imposed on humanity; there is none in the end. They do nothing and produce nothing, in terms of physics and the real physical universe – in other words it (the whole of human history) has all been for nothing.

Utterly perplexing and mind-boggling.

We can do better.

More Wordplay

I haven’t posted anything in the Wordplay series in a while.  Here’s one that’s right on target with the moment.  Enjoy!

MISNOMER [mis•no•mer]

noun

Etymology:  From Anglo-Norman mesnomer, noun use of Anglo-Norman and Old French verb mesnomer (“to name incorrectly”), from mes- (“mis-”) + nomer (“to name”) (from Latin nōmināre).

The Wordplay:

Misnomer  is a  rarely used yet very relevant word in today’s world. In spite of a very popular definition believed by many, a misnomer is NOT the placement of the wrong kind of yard decorations (the ones with the pointy hats).   The actual definition of the word is:  incorrect or unsuitable name or term for a person or thing.

Examples: “failing bank” or “failed bank” “cash wealth” “borrowed money” “a loan” “credit card” ‘credit score” “fiscal responsibility” “economic recovery”

THE FIRST HUMAN MIRACLE

I woke up this morning, fit and ready to enjoy,
With thirst, the sun, a smile and as always; full of joy.
I opened the window and outside, if you can believe it,
There was everything there is to see, except I couldn’t see it.

It wasn’t because of sickness that my eyes could not perceive,
It was out of fear and terror that my brain would not believe,
It would not accept, regardless of how much my eyes insisted,
That the world that was once upon a time, no longer existed.

In its place was a copy of what I thought was familiar to me,
So ugly and profane, my senses denied what it might just be.
It’s hard to imagine that no one noticed and those who did kept their silence just fine,
We had sold our humanity for money; even the sadness I felt wasn’t mine.

Everything that we have been, within and without
We gave away ‘cause we are lazy; of that there’s no doubt.
And it might just be that with irrelevance and fear –
The entire human race may simply disappear.

Yet I write this now before what’s done has yet cemented,
That which will cause us so much pain when it could have been prevented.
And suddenly I realize that what will be has not yet occurred,
That tomorrow hasn’t happened yet; it will be the result deed and word,

There is still time before we look beyond that window’s wood,
To see what there really is and not what we are told we should.
An perhaps we might just learn, without fear and without sorrow,
That what together all of us do right now, might just bear fruit tomorrow.

This morning….

This morning; February 16, 2013; I went for a walk.  Yes, I said a walk.  I actually walked a whole 6 blocks, just enough to reach a street near my home with a small shopping mall that includes a quaint little outdoor cafe-type place, but where people play Sudoku and a host of other modern-day activities that are still alien to me.  I had come to think there weren’t any of these left, but it was nice to see, just as it was nice to see the two little old ladies sitting at a table in the cool morning air – oh wait, is “little old ladies” still the acceptable term?  I’m not sure if it’s already evolved linguistically, maybe the proper term now is “GILF” (you figure it out).  In any event, the two gray haired ladies were having coffee, coffee!  They were also expertly and furiously manipulating their I-pads, or Galaxy tablets, or any of the devices that we can’t live without.  They were reading the news: the Google news app, yahoo news, etc.  As I passed the cafe, not more than 3 feet from where they were sitting; this is what I overheard one of them say as she read the news app:

-”Oh great!  Shit!  As if all the crap that’s going on nowadays isn’t enough, now we seem to have developed meteors!”

The walk back home was priceless; I had the biggest smile I’ve had in weeks.  We humans are outrageous, fickle, self-centered and even idiotic at times – but we are also spectacular!  We can do so much with what we have.  I don’t know if we actually will or not, in the face of what’s ahead, but no matter what happens, I love all of you;  all 7 billion of you – after all we’re all we have!

EVOLUTION!?

We are so far advanced from where we were 10,000 or more years ago.  We are such badasses!  Just to think, not that long ago, we were little more than naked, nomadic semi-animals who spent the majority of their time looking for food.

Now, however, we have GROWN AND EVOLVED.  Look at US! See what we have evolved into:

Today I received an e-mail.  It was spam, just like the other 412 e-mails that I received in the last 15 minutes (it now takes a measurable amount of time for a person to “sift” out real e-mails from the spam).  This particular e-mail caught my attention because of the bright colors (because I’m a recovering 20th century consumer) and when I read it, it really had an impact.  At the end of this post there is a screen shot of the e-mail message.  Just in case the text is too small and you can’t make it out well, the e-mail reads as follows:

—————————————————————————————————————————-

Hey frank (then my email address which I blacked out)

Use this information to Blackmail Anyone You Know

Ever wished you could get back at someone by uncovering dirty information?

If they have a speck of dirt under their fingernails, we’ll find it and provide it to you.  Find out background information on anyone in just minutes (arrests, past marriages/felony)

Get the Dirty on Anyone Here (in the green button)

——————————————————————————————————————————

This is what we have evolved into?  This is the best we have?

Sometimes, we suck, big time.

(PS, in case the author of the e-mail is reading this:  Get a life!!)

What's left of us.

Empty spaces

Every time a thought is left unspoken by the person who thought it, it withers and dies for not having been shared and an empty space is all that remains in all the space between all of us; space preferably full with the stuff of human communication.

Every time the inspiration to act is ignored or subdued, only inaction remains. Nothing happens at all and this leaves an empty space in all of space between all of us that could be ripe with actions; human actions, our actions; our choices.

The amount of empty space between all of us is piling up; quickly and it’s not a very good idea to have a lot of empty space, because empty space can be filled up with anything at all by anyone at all, even a hateful thought, a greedy and selfless act or generally inhuman behavior – and that is exactly what is happening.

Think, if you do, you will produce. Act; do so with love and you will build up our humanity. Speak and do, with your entire mind and all your heart. Leave no empty space in your path, the empty spaces we leave are so very tempting for selfish thoughts. We are not each other’s enemies, we are all we have. Let us be the authors and builders of our future and not the cause of not having one. Have the strength and the desire to love; do you have any of either left? You do.

We can do better.

As to 2013

During these first 5 days of 2013; I have been asked a single question more than any other, so much so, that I’m posting both the question and my response.

The Question:   “Frank, so what’s your take on 2013 so far?”

The Response: “So far, 2013 has been like backing out of your driveway, with the parking brake on the whole way, and a boot on two of the four tires.”

I have yet to see an indication that 2013 has any intention of starting yet- in any way save that which increases fear, suspense, speculation and the total paralysis of commerce at most levels, despite what one may read or hear from “the news”.

It’s still a question mark as to what this means, it’s up to us.  If we take it as a strong signal of a catastrophic ending, then it shall be so, but if we take the total lack of structure affecting everyone, everywhere; it is also an opportunity to re-write the whole book; you know, the one that needs to be re-written desperately.   It’s up to us: all of us, not some of us.
